New diagnostic programme combining biomarker testing with algorithm-driven analysis will support earlier diagnosis and more informed clinical decisions
The UAE is strengthening its cancer diagnostic capabilities through a new programme designed to support earlier detection and help clinicians make more informed decisions about further investigation and treatment.
Led by M42’s National Reference Laboratory, the initiative will explore how advanced biomarker testing and multi-marker algorithm-driven analysis can be incorporated into clinical practice. An initial pilot will provide the evidence and operational experience needed to inform broader implementation across the healthcare system.
The programme reflects the UAE’s growing emphasis on prevention and early intervention as part of its wider health system development. Early detection and screening are central to the National Cancer Control Programme, with the country seeking to close existing gaps and improve cancer outcomes through more timely diagnosis.
Earlier diagnosis can give patients more treatment options and improve outcomes, but the value of new diagnostic technologies will depend on how effectively they are integrated into clinical pathways.
National Reference Laboratory’s role as a national provider of diagnostic services will support the development of the laboratory capacity and clinical processes needed for wider adoption. The organisation will work with global healthcare company Abbott, which will contribute its expertise in cancer diagnostics and advanced testing technologies.
Dr Laila Abdel Wareth, Chief Executive Officer of National Reference Laboratory, said the partnership would strengthen early cancer detection in the UAE by expanding access to advanced diagnostic technologies. Combining international expertise with NRL’s national laboratory capabilities would support earlier diagnosis and improve patient outcomes, she added.
The collaboration supports the preventive healthcare ambitions set out in UAE Vision 2031 and the country’s wider efforts to develop a more coordinated oncology system. The initial pilot will help determine how the technology could be used across the UAE before any broader implementation.
