Clinical AI Platform Targets Paperwork Across UAE and Bahrain Hospitals

M42 has activated Ossi across seven healthcare facilities to support clinical documentation and give doctors more time with patients

Clinicians at seven healthcare facilities in the UAE and Bahrain now have access to an artificial intelligence platform designed to reduce paperwork and make patient information easier to use during consultations.

Ossi, developed by M42 using Microsoft Azure’s cloud and AI infrastructure, works alongside existing electronic medical records.  It can prepare draft clinical notes for review and summarise relevant information from a patient’s history, helping doctors spend less time navigating records.

The platform has been activated at Amana facilities in the UAE and Bahrain, alongside Healthpoint, HealthPlus and Mubadala Health Dubai. S heikh Sultan bin Zayed Hospital and Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi are also included.

Announced during the recent Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, the launch extends the use of AI assistance across different parts of the consultation, with clinicians retaining responsibility for decisions.

Support within the consultation

The platform launches with four AI agents, each supporting a defined task.  An ambient scribe transcribes clinical conversations and prepares draft documentation for the clinician to check.  A health record agent retrieves relevant information from electronic records and produces a summary.  A clinical question-and-answer agent helps clinicians access information and prepare educational material for patients.  A separate coding agent suggests medical codes from the documentation, subject to review by the appropriate teams.

The potential time saving is particularly relevant when doctors need to review extensive records before an appointment. “If a patient is going to see an oncology doctor, usually the doctor spends three to four hours before the patient visit to review the file,” Kareem Shahin, CEO of the Digital Health Solutions Platform and Group Chief Digital Officer at M42, told The National.  “With Ossi and AI, this can be reduced to less than 10 to 15 minutes.”

Connections with existing records

Ossi supports multiple languages and can work with different large language models.  Its connections with electronic medical records use established healthcare data standards, including HL7 and FHIR, or interfaces configured for individual systems, allowing the platform to operate alongside existing records while supporting access to patient information.

M42 says its work with Microsoft also addresses regional requirements for health data security and privacy.  The wider ambition is to make clinical information more accessible without adding another administrative task to the consultation.  “Microsoft Azure provides a trusted foundation for Ossi to streamline clinicians’ workflow and enhance patient care,” says Elena Bonfiglioli, Global Business Leader and Vice President for Healthcare, Pharma and Life Sciences at Microsoft.

M42 plans to expand the platform beyond its initial four agents, developing further capabilities to support clinicians throughout their work.
