{"id":663,"date":"2021-04-14T18:30:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T18:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthcareworld.com\/festival\/?p=663"},"modified":"2021-04-14T18:30:34","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T18:30:34","slug":"night-for-nurses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthcareworld.com\/festival\/night-for-nurses\/","title":{"rendered":"NIGHT\u00a0for Nurses\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Making the mental health of nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants a top priority, by Sophia Kurz\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The advent of COVID-19\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">impacted the United Kingdom\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in ways that no one could predict.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So far, the UK\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">death toll numbers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">127<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0individuals\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with more than 4m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0cases. The virus has affected not just\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">patients\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and their families, but also healthcare workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Working long hours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at risk of contracting the virus,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0they also have to deal with the heavy stress and pressure placed to keep their COVID infected patients alive.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nurses are suffering the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are physically and mentally exhausted. Particularly, within critical care, there are significant levels of post-traumatic stress evident, which is extremely worrying. This is simply not sustainable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d said Nicki\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Credland<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, chair of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">British Association of Critical Care Nurses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Nightingale Initiative for Global Healthcare Transformation (NIGHT) was founded earlier this year by Peter Arndt and Kieran Prince.\u00a0 It is aiming to raise funds in order to provide confidential mental health services to NHS nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants when required.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I think\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we probably got one of the fastest approvals in the history of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">harity\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ommission<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d says co-founder Peter Arndt.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We handed in the application on 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">December, two hours before they shut down for the year and we got the approval three hours after they opened up on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">4<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">January.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">NIGHT\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ambition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to help NHS\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">led<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0by the alarming number who experience mental health issues, but do not reach out. According to the charity\u2019s website, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The annual suicide rate within nursing is nearly 2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5 per cent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0above the national average<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">85<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0per cent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of medical practitioners have experienced problems with mental health but have never sought out treatment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">NIGHT is a unique charity in that they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">aim to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provide\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">professional help to sufferers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in contrast to other mental health charities who often utili<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e volunteers to speak with individuals. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">There are about 25 to 30 mental health charities in the United Kingdom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ut they don&#8217;t have clinicians because clinicians charge to treat someone.
